Murf's Photography - HISTORY

I was born and raised in Clinton, Iowa, I went to St. Mary's High School, and went to Clinton High School my junior and senior years.  I graduated in 1971, went to Clinton Community College, and untill I was drafted, I got the lucky number one.

Enlisted in the US Navy, served honorably and was discharged in May of 1974. After my discharge, I became a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Amvets Post 28 of the state of Iowa.

When I was little I grew up around photography, my father was an avid amateur photographer, he got several awards for it.  My mother was a very gifted person also, she was always into arts and crafts.

I was also amazed by the old master photographers in the area, how they always made such beautiful portraits of people, how they lit there faces, with beautiful soft light.

I consider myself very fortunate to be working with one of the old photographers Mrs. Joahhna Finley, who had Finley studio here in Clinton since 1953.  The knowledge I've learned from this woman is priceless.  The photographers of that era were masters at their trade in in producing beautiful head and shoulder portraits, she has taught me her trade secrets of posing and lighting portraits, in today's photography it separates the truly rembrant portraits to allot of fancy large studios, or big company studios that have there portrait flat lit, and are not of true color, and fade in a short while.

I started in 1987 in photography business, I went back to school, attended various schools and seminars. When I felt good enough about my work I went into photography with a great hunger and passion.

I've won several national awards in photography, also I've won several awards in the Northern Lights professional Photography Association.

In the new generation of photographers in Clinton, I was the first to obtain his Certified Professional Photographers Degree, of which there are only 1600 world wide.

I personally believe in making the head and shoulders portraits look like paintings, not with flat lighting that you get with large studios, and rear projection systems.   I also don't like to do geek looking poses, anyone who knows me will tell you, I believe in capturing the natural person.

In our studio its very relaxed and casual, I'm about the most approachable person you can meet, I never act or pretend to be better than the person I'm photographing, but consider this person a very important part of my life, because without you we would have no business, I believe in a very strong customer relationship, small town relaxed atmosphere, it with be a blast.
